Peter Higgs (1929-2024)

Peter Higgs visited St Andrews in November 1979. I was the editor of INDEX, the journal of the University's mathematics and physics society, and wrote the report below. The uncertainty over his titles - Dr, Professor - may be my fault, but his personal chair in theoretical physics at Edinburgh was then imminent: this issue was nominally for December, but Professor Crispin Wright's January 1980 lecture was also reported, so I suspect a slight delay.

After Neil McGill's talk on relativity I felt, as committee members do, that someone had to ask a bright question, so I rambled pretentiously and at length about Henri Poincaré. The instant and complete answer: "No".
