Opt., vol. 27, pp. 5381-5385, September 1996. Lasers often include polarisation-sensitive elements such as Brewster plates, which (for example) transmit the desired linear polarisation and suppress the orthogonal polarisation (by reflecting it out of the cavity). By applying a voltage to the electro-optic crystal, the polarisation could be adjusted so that – at first sight – the loss would be very large, the laser could never lase, and we would have a useful controllable pulsed device. Extra Brewster plates could be inserted to make doubly sure. But some Dundee / Malvern designs favoured the unwanted polarisation as the number of plates was increased. “The theoretical threshold condition (i.e., the retardation required to extinguish the laser) is obtained from a cavity round-trip Jones matrix. We show that adding extra Brewster plates may be counterproductive in that the required retardation voltage increases”. This seemed peculiar, but (once again) I had learned to trust resonators to explore the options and find the lowest-loss available field, and the Jones-matrix model supported our lab results.
